Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC)
Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) is the ACT’s sole adult correctional facility, accommodating detainees of all genders across minimum to maximum security classifications. Located in Canberra, AMC supports both sentenced individuals and those on remand, operating under the Corrections Management Act 2007. The centre features an open campus design with a mix of cell blocks, domestic-style cottages, a Crisis Support Unit, Management Unit, and a Transitional Release Centre. Emphasising sustainability, the facility includes 2.1 million litres of underground water storage, grey water recycling, solar hot water systems, and high-grade building insulation. Guided by ACT Corrective Services’ commitment to the “healthy prison” model, AMC promotes safety, dignity, purposeful activity, and effective rehabilitation. The centre aims to provide a secure and respectful environment that supports rehabilitation, family connection, and preparation for reintegration into the community.
